Beeston Breaks Through at Tain Golf Week | Club News

Tain Golf Club’s Golf Week came to a close on Thursday after four days of competitive golf, difficult conditions, dramatic match play and a long-awaited victory in the week’s premier event.

The Gents’ 4 Day Open once again formed the centrepiece of the week, with two rounds of qualifying on Monday and Tuesday followed by knockout match play across Wednesday and Thursday. Running alongside it was the Jail Dornoch Ladies’ 36 Hole Open, bringing another strong field to Tain for two days of Stableford competition.

In the Gents’ qualifying, Steven Buchan of Invergordon Golf Club led the scratch standings with rounds of 72 and 71 for a 143 total, three over par.

Tain’s Calum Afrin topped the handicap qualifying with two excellent nett rounds of 65 for a 130 total, ten under par.

Conditions became particularly testing on Tuesday, but it was Wednesday afternoon that produced one of the defining moments of the week.

A torrential downpour swept across the course late in the day, forcing play to be suspended with five matches still to be completed.

After the worst of the weather had passed, the course was inspected and, thanks to how well it had coped with the volume of rainfall, conditions improved sufficiently for play to resume.

All five outstanding matches were eventually completed.

The final match on the course came in the Munro Rose Bowl, where Lyle Mackay and Graham Mackintosh could not be separated after 18 holes. Their contest continued into extra holes as the light began to fade, with Mackintosh eventually prevailing at the 20th.

The pair finished in near darkness as the last match of the evening came to a close, bringing a dramatic end to an already eventful afternoon.

Thursday then brought the semi-finals and finals, with the McVitie & Price Cup taking centre stage.

One of the standout matches of the morning saw great friends Scott Murray and James Beeston face each other for a place in the final.

Beeston came through the semi-final to set up a meeting with club stalwart Billy Ferries, already a two-time winner of the McVitie & Price Cup.

For Beeston, the final carried particular significance. He had twice previously reached this stage without managing to lift the trophy.

On his third appearance, that wait finally came to an end.

Beeston defeated Ferries 3&2 to claim the 2026 McVitie & Price Cup and secure the major title of Golf Week.

It was a fitting reward for a player who had come so close before and added another strong story to the history of the event.

There was also a particularly appropriate winner in the Stirling Cup.

Tain Golf Club Head Greenkeeper Ross MacRae progressed through the knockout stages before defeating Neil Edwards 3&1 in the final.

After a week in which the course had been tested by some severe weather, there was something especially fitting about the man responsible for preparing it going on to lift one of Golf Week’s historic trophies.

The Munro Rose Bowl produced plenty of drama of its own.

Graham Mackintosh, fresh from his remarkable 20-hole victory over Lyle Mackay on Wednesday evening, made his way through to Thursday’s final, where he faced Alan Pater.

Once again, 18 holes were not enough.

Pater eventually secured victory at the 19th to claim the Munro Rose Bowl after another closely fought contest.

The Brookes Cup also went right to the end.

Steven Swanson came through the knockout stages to meet Steven Martin in the final, with little separating the pair throughout.

Swanson eventually held on to win 1 up and claim the Brookes Cup, rounding off another competitive division of the Gents’ 4 Day Open.

Running alongside the opening two days of the Gents’ event was the Jail Dornoch Ladies’ 36 Hole Open.

Played as a two-round Stableford, the competition once again welcomed ladies from Tain and visiting clubs for 36 holes over Monday and Tuesday.

Vickie Schleter of Portmahomack (Tarbat) Golf Club took the title with rounds of 35 and 38 points for a 73-point total.

Heather Small, also of Portmahomack, finished runner-up on 71 points, while Lucy Davidson of Prestonfield Golf Club took third place with 69.

Across the week, the golf was only part of the story.

There was changing weather, a suspension of play, a remarkable recovery of the course, extra holes, matches played into fading light and four knockout competitions producing their own individual moments.

The course itself also emerged with plenty of credit. To suffer a torrential downpour severe enough to force a suspension of play, yet recover sufficiently for every outstanding match to be completed that evening, was testament to the natural drainage of the links and the work of Ross MacRae and the greenkeeping team.

The 2026 champions were James Beeston in the McVitie & Price Cup, Ross MacRae in the Stirling Cup, Alan Pater in the Munro Rose Bowl and Steven Swanson in the Brookes Cup.

Vickie Schleter claimed the Jail Dornoch Ladies’ 36 Hole Open, while Steven Buchan led the Gents’ scratch qualifying and Calum Afrin topped the handicap qualifying.

Golf Week has long been an important part of the calendar at Tain Golf Club, and this year once again provided the kind of stories that make the event what it is.

Our thanks go to everyone who competed, everyone who travelled to Tain to support the events, and to the greenkeeping, Pro Shop, catering, clubhouse and volunteer teams who helped make another busy week possible.
