Cameron Rolls Back the Years to Claim Tain Club Championship Title

Tain Golf Club’s 2026 Club Championship produced a memorable week of golf, with demanding conditions, strong matchplay performances and a remarkable return to the winners’ circle for James Cameron, who claimed the Scratch title 30 years after his first victory.

The Championship began with two rounds of qualifying, played in tough, windy conditions that provided a stern test for the field. Scoring was far from straightforward, with players required to show patience, control and sound course management over the 36 holes.

David MacCormack emerged as the leading qualifier, setting the early benchmark with an excellent performance across the two rounds. In conditions where every shot had to be carefully judged, his consistency stood out and earned him top seeding heading into the matchplay stages.

There was also a notable performance from 14-year-old Euan Cameron, son of eventual champion James Cameron, who qualified for the Scratch matchplay and went on to win his first-round tie. His run was eventually ended by finalist James Beeston, but his performance was one of the standout achievements of the week and a clear sign of the young talent coming through at the club.

Once qualifying was complete, the Championship moved into the matchplay stages, where the format brought its usual blend of pressure, momentum swings and closely fought contests. Across both the Scratch and Handicap sections, players had to handle not only their opponents, but the continued challenge of difficult conditions.

In the Scratch Championship, James Cameron made his way steadily through the draw, showing the composure and experience needed to compete deep into Championship week. His semi-final brought him up against leading qualifier David MacCormack in one of the key ties of the tournament. Cameron came through that match to secure his place in the final, where he would face James Beeston.

Beeston had earned his place in the final with a strong run of his own, including victory over young Euan Cameron earlier in the draw. With the wind again making scoring difficult, the final was always likely to be decided by patience, judgement and the ability to manage the key moments.

The Scratch final came down to short game and nerve over the closing holes. The decisive moment arrived at the 17th, where Cameron managed to get up and down at a crucial stage, while Beeston was unable to do the same. Even then, the contest was not over. On the final green, Beeston had a chance from around 15 feet to take the match into extra holes, but the putt slipped by and Cameron’s second Club Championship title was secured.

The victory carried particular significance, coming 30 years after Cameron’s first Club Championship success, and added another impressive chapter to his playing record at the club. To return to the winner’s circle three decades later, in testing conditions and against strong opposition, was a fine achievement.

The Handicap Championship brought its own strong storyline, with Andrew MacRae and Archie Cameron progressing through the draw to reach the final. Archie’s run added further family interest to the week, but MacRae proved the stronger player on the day, securing victory to become the 2026 Tain Golf Club Handicap Club Champion.

MacRae’s win was a deserved reward for a consistent Championship campaign, while Archie Cameron’s run to the final further underlined the strength of the younger players competing at Tain.

This year’s Club Championship brought together many of the elements that make club golf so compelling: experienced players performing under pressure, younger golfers making their mark, difficult conditions testing every part of the game, and matchplay golf creating drama from the opening ties through to the finals.

Tain Golf Club would like to thank the greenkeeping team for their early morning work and continued efforts in preparing the course throughout the Championship. Thanks also go to match referees Gus Gurney and Seann Sutherland for giving their time and supporting the smooth running of the finals.

The week will be remembered not only for its winners, but for the quality of competition across both draws. David MacCormack set the standard in qualifying, James Beeston and Archie Cameron produced excellent runs to their respective finals, 14-year-old Euan Cameron made a strong impression in the Scratch Championship, and Andrew MacRae claimed a well-earned Handicap title.

At the centre of it all, however, was James Cameron’s second Club Championship victory, a title won with experience, short-game touch and composure under pressure, three decades after his first. It was a fitting conclusion to a memorable Championship week at Tain Golf Club.
