An Annual Celebration of Amateur Golfing Talent

Golf Week

The Stotters - The Mighty Men in Yellow

Tain Golf Week, held each August, has been a favourite on the golfing calendar for many decades, but back in 1966 a new tradition began that turned this event into something rather remarkable.

A group of 12 holidaying golfers who were taking part in Tain’s Golf Week playfully challenged local members to a game. The team of visitors called themselves The Stotters (colloquial Scottish, meaning “totterers”) and took to the course determined to beat 12 members of the Tain Golf Club at their own game.

The match has been repeated every year since during Tain’s Golf Week.

The original contenders are no longer around to take part, but their descendants keep the tradition going with the same spirit of amicable rivalry.

The Stotters are now a fully-fledged society of golfers who have adopted distinctive yellow shirts – dubbed the mighty men in yellow – and the Fun Greensomes 12 versus 12 match is repeated year after year, with mixed results (although in recent years the Stotters have consistently emerged victorious).
